On May 26, 1997, a group of baptized believers met in the chapel of The Andrews Funeral Home at 116 Ashby Street, N.W., Atlanta, to discuss and form a fellowship to worship our Savior in spirit and in truth. Dr. Emanuel McCall, presided over this meeting. The suggested name of Victory Baptist Church was offered by Pastor James A. Wilborn, Jr.
The first worship service was held on the second Sunday of June in 1997 at 11:00am. |
The group met for approximately three years in the chapel Andrews Funeral Home with 27 believers of the Baptist faith and one was later baptized by Pastor Wilborn. Our music ministry began at 116 Ashby Street with our First Lady, Audrey Lavelle Wilborn, as pianist and organist and since several musicians have contributed.
Pastor Wilborn appointed Harold Johnson as Chairman of The Deacon Board. Respectively, there were initially three deacons; Harold Johnson, DeWitt Wilborn and Joe Wilborn. Sixteen Deacons have since been ordained at Victory. The trustees at the time were Sylvia Dunlap and Joe Wilborn. Katrenna Smith was appointed at a later date as Church Clerk.
Through the real estate expertise of Deacon Andrew Jackson, Sr., the mediation of Mr. Thomas J. Locke, the blessings of New Morning Light Baptist Church and Capital City Bank President George Andrews, Victory Baptist Church of Atlanta, Inc. celebrated its first worship service on May 7, 2000 at its new location, 2736 Dodson Dr., East Point, GA (formally The First Church of Christ Scientist).
Victory Baptist Church of Atlanta elected its second pastor, Rev. Walter C. Mobley, Jr. on January 15, 2023. Under Rev. Mobley, Victory Baptist Church adopted its Mission Statement: “We believe in Jesus the Christ as the only begotten son of God and have accepted Him into our lives as Savior and Lord; and through the indwelling Holy Spirit, we will live our lives according to God’s word, and share His word to all people with the goals that they will give their lives to Christ.”
Victory continues to grow spiritually every year under the motto: “Our Impossibilities, Are God's Opportunities!”
