Rev. James A. Wilborn, Jr., Founding Pastor
Rev. James A. “Jimmy” Wilborn, Jr. was the first of three sons born to Dr. J.A. and Orian Babcock Wilborn in Atlanta, Georgia. He was born February 29, 1948. He received a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Morehouse College in 1970. He earned a Master of Divinity in Homiletics and Church Ministries from Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in 1974.
In 1974, Jimmy entered the United States Air Force as a chaplain with the rank of Captain. He was the first Black chaplain endorsed in any branch of the U.S. Military Service by the Southern Baptist Convention. Some awards and honors that he received were Outstanding Chaplain Award-1993, Certificate of Appreciation from U.S. President Bill Clinton and the National Defense Service Medal. Over 40 years ago, Chaplain Wilborn established the first gospel service at Dover Air Force Base that still exists today. Jimmy retired with twenty years of service in June 1994.
While at ITC, he met the love of his life, Miss Audrey LaVelle Montgomery. They were married on his birthday in 1976 at Union Baptist Church. They happily welcomed their first born, Angel Zanetta, and five years later, Jimmy’s namesake, James Adam, III.
On May 26, 1997, a group of baptized believers met in the chapel of The Andrews Funeral Home to form a fellowship to worship our Savior in spirit and in truth. Dr. Emmanuel McCall, presided over this meeting. Rev. Wilborn suggested name of Victory Baptist Church. Victory Baptist Church of Atlanta, Inc. celebrated its first worship service May 7, 2000 at its new location at 2736 Dodson Dr., East Point, GA, formally The First Church of Christ Scientist.
Rev. Wilborn loved fellowshipping with his members and had a personal relationship with each one until his death on May 11, 2020.
